Alfa Romeo Scighera is a prototype created in 1997 by Italdesign Giugiaro S.p.A, the company founded by Giorgetto Giugiaro with Aldo Mantovani in 1968 and which have born very known by the good designs fans to the car.
The Scighera, pronounced Shigeera, name comes from a word in the Milanese dialect which means mist. The color of the car, grey irisado, change hue depending on the prevailing lighting. An originality of full design details.
The motivation of Italdesing to create the Scighera, was to revive the glory and reputation of Alfa Romeo at the races, a tribute to the legendary Milanese signature sports triumphed on the slopes during the decades of the 1960s and 1970s.
After the success that was to Italdesing the BMW Nazca, Giugiaro wanted to draw on the experience gained in terms of features and benefits of that model, creating a completely new chassis and incorporating a very powerful engine.
Using mechanical elements of Alfa Romeo for its construction, this Coupe monocuerpo, very compact, and two-seater was equipped with a chassis that were used very light material, an alloy of aluminium in the rigid parts and carbon fibre.
Originality in design
The front hood arises directly front calandra and Abbé back, allowing access to the compartment baggage. In the profile of the fins are placed the headlights with a form called eyes of clown.
The calandra is a spoiler, as the front spoiler of a formula 1. This aerodynamic component is not designed to channel air to cool the engine, which is placed behind, but to put pressure on the front train.
The windshield is inspired by the decades of 50 and 60 cars. The doors consist of two parts: the lower gull-wing type that opens in the traditional sense forward and higher up.
The upper part of the door is removable, allowing to convert the already on its spectacular Alfa Romeo Scighera in a convertible type targa. Every detail, with seats and leather hand sewn French is maintained in the elegant interior.
The large rear hood and the spoiler are built in one piece. The hood lowered back in two stages, one to allow access to the mouth of the fuel tank and the other to discover the engine. The upper part is transparent to show the mechanical jewel that animates the Scighera.
The large rear spoiler that rises to exceed the 140 km/h to provide aerodynamic support the rear train, integrates its Ridge a luminous band which reinforces the brake lights. On his side is decorated with the coat of arms of Alfa Romeo.
Alfa Romeo Scighera measures are: 4.320 mm, width 1,980 mm and height 1,140 millimeters length. Italdesing has not specified weight or there are official data on maximum speed and Acceleration, although texts I have consulted refers to an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 4 seconds.
With regard to the engine, located in central longitudinal position, is an Alfa Romeo V6 2.959 cc twin, modified by Italdesing. With relation to the career of 93 × 72.6 mm, diameter develops 400 HP at 7,500 rpm.
The Scighera traction is integral for the Alfa Romeo 155. The gearbox is sequential six-speed and the electronic clutch. The suspension has a single buffer at the front wheels and double triangles with transverse dampers in the rear.
Alfa Romeo Scighera was presented at the Turin salon with a natural scale model of what would have been the competition version. Initially intended to be built in a limited series, the truth is that the car wasn’t there and never manufactured.
